Research work is one of the major activities of the Academy of the Interior Ministry of the Republic of Belarus which is organized in accordance with the laws of the Republic of Belarus «On research activity» and «On higher education», normative legal acts of the Interior Ministry, Ministry of education, Supreme commission for academic degrees and titles, the Statute of the Academy of the Interior Ministry, the directive on the organization of research activities at the Academy of the Interior Ministry and other regulations.

The main objectives of research work at the Academy of the Interior Ministry:

 
1. Organizing and carrying out scientific research projects aimed at the development of the theory and perfection of practice of law-enforcement activity;
2. Research and scientific evaluation of social, economic, demographic and other factors and circumstances which determine crime;
3. Development of scientifically grounded recommendations on combating crime;
4. Elaboration of proposals on the improvement of legislation of the Republic of Belarus;
5. Perfection of the process of training and education at the Academy of the Interior Ministry;
6. Training of research workers of top qualification;
7. Retraining and advanced training of the officers of practical units of internal affairs bodies making use of the latest scientific and technical achievements.

In the framework of conducting research projects the Academy of the Interior Ministry cooperates with higher educational and research institutions of the Republic of Belarus and foreign countries, republican bodies of state administration by means of conducting joint research activities, organizing scientific workshops, exchanging experience and literature.

Results of research work are implemented into the training process and law-enforcement practice and are realized in scientific publications and academic literature. Over the past 3 years employees of the Academy of the Interior Ministry have published 7 tutorials, 22 training books approved by the Ministry of education, 37 monographs and over 1500 academic papers and scientific abstracts.

For the purpose of training of personnel of top qualification there is a scientific and pedagogical faculty at the Academy of the Interior Ministry which carries out the training of specialists in 7 scientific qualifications of legal and psychological profiles. Over 30 post graduate students representing officers of law-enforcement agencies are trained at the faculty every year.

A thesis council and a joint interdisciplinary scientific workshop on the issue of combating crime have been created for the purpose of improving research activity at the Academy of the Interior Ministry and the evaluation of the results of research activities and preliminary expert examination of thesis work.

Supreme commission for academic degrees and titles of the Republic of Belarus determined a new duration period for the thesis council К 06.01.01 at the Academy of the Interior Ministry until June, 27th 2015. The council is entitled to organize PhD thesis defence in qualifications 12.00.08 (criminal law and criminology, correctional law), 12.00.09 (criminal procedure, criminalistics and forensic investigations, operational activity).
